The Trenet de la Marina, the iconic tramway that winds along the beautiful Costa Blanca, has a special history dating back to the early 20th century (1915). Originally designed as a narrow gauge line to connect small villages and transport local produce to the coast, the line has grown over the years into an essential link for residents and tourists alike.
From steam trains to modern electric trams, the Trenet de la Marina has repeatedly adapted to the changing needs of the region. Discover how this historic line - now the TRAM Metropolitano de Alicante - after years of extensive renovation, still offers an enchanting and sustainable way to explore the Costa Blanca's charming villages and towns.
The Trenet de la Marina covers the route from Alicante to Dénia, with stops along the way in several charming coastal towns and villages. The line is divided into five routes, with line L1, L3, and L9 being the most interesting for those who want to explore the Costa Blanca:
1. Alicante - El Campello (L1 and L3)
The tram departs from the heart of Alicante, where you can enjoy the historic centre, the Santa Bárbara castle and the beautiful Explanada de España boulevard. Alicante is followed by El Campello, a quiet fishing village that has become a tourist destination, known for its long beaches and charming port. The remains of the old watchtower, Torre de la Illeta, testify to the rich history of this place.
2. Benidorm - popular holiday destination and commercial center (L1 en L3)
After El Campello, the tram stops in the famous town of Benidorm, known for its high-rise hotels and lively nightlife. But Benidorm also has an authentic side, with the old town, the Balcón del Mediterráneo (a beautiful viewpoint), and the long-stretched beaches. Here you can change to line L9, which continues along the coast.
3. Altea - white houses and narrow streets (L9)
From Benidorm, line L9 takes you further to Altea, a picturesque town known for its whitewashed houses, narrow streets and the charming blue-tiled dome of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Consuelo church. A favourite destination for artists, Altea offers a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere with its many art galleries, craft shops and cosy cafés.
4. Calpe - the Ifach rock and sandy beaches (L9)
After Altea comes Calpe, a town with a unique mix of modern buildings and ancient remains. The town is dominated by the Peñón de Ifach, a huge rock that towers 332 metres above the Mediterranean Sea. Calpe is also known for its fishing port and seafood restaurants, where you can enjoy fresh seafood.
5. Teulada en Gata de Gorgos - traditionele crafts (L9)
Inland, you can get off at Teulada and Gata de Gorgos. Teulada offers a traditional Spanish atmosphere and is the perfect place for a quiet afternoon. Gata de Gorgos is famous for its handmade products such as baskets, ceramics and furniture, and offers a glimpse into the region's craft heritage.
6. Dénia - historic en gastronomic paradise (L9)
The final destination of this tram route is the historic town of Dénia, located at the foot of a hill on which a castle stands. Dénia is known for its fishing port, historical monuments and excellent food culture. It is a wonderful place to end your journey along the Costa Blanca.
The tram runs all year round, with additional services during the high season in summer. You can find the current timetable and fares on the Tram Metropolitano de Alicante's official website : TRAM Alicante.
Trams on lines L1 and L3 run frequently between Alicante and Benidorm, usually every 30 minutes.
Line L9, between Benidorm and Dénia, usually offers a service every hour, but always check the times as frequency can vary.
Tickets are easily available at stations or via the Tram Alicante app. Fares depend on the zones you travel through, and there are several ticket options, such as a single ticket, a day pass and discounts for seniors and young people. The prices are very reasonable. You can often get there and back for the same price as a parking ticket.
